El Salvador Defeats Bonaire in Championship Match
San Salvador, El Salvador - The El Salvador national football team has won the Concacaf Nations League after defeating Bonaire 3-1 in the championship match on Tuesday, June 14th, 2023.
The match was played at the Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador, El Salvador, and saw El Salvador dominate the proceedings from the start.
Enes Salihovic opened the scoring for El Salvador in the 12th minute with a stunning free-kick, then doubled their lead 20 minutes later with a header from a corner kick.
Bonaire Pulls One Back
Bonaire pulled one back in the second half through a penalty converted by Leandro Bacuna, but El Salvador sealed the victory in the 85th minute when Enrico Hernandez scored their third.
"This is a dream come true," said El Salvador coach Hugo Perez after the match. "We have worked so hard for this, and to finally win the Concacaf Nations League is an incredible feeling."
"I am so proud of my players. They showed great heart and determination throughout the tournament, and they deserve all the credit for this victory."
The victory is El Salvador's first major trophy since winning the Copa Centroamericana in 2013.
It also secures them a spot in the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the region's premier international football competition.
