Bangladesh Protests Intensify After Deadly Sunday

Anger Over Nearly 100 Deaths Fuels Demonstrations

Government, Police Clash with Students Nationwide

Anti-government protests in Bangladesh have escalated, sparked by the deaths of nearly 100 people on Sunday, the deadliest day since the protests began. Local news media and protest organizers have reported a death toll of at least 72 across the country, while a diplomatic official in Dhaka, the capital, confirmed it to be at least 150.

The latest round of violence erupted on Monday, with police firing tear gas and lobbing stun grenades on protesters. More than 20 people were killed and dozens more injured in the clashes.

Protest leaders have moved the demonstrations forward a day in anger over the Sunday deaths. The protests, which began in July, have been fueled by dissatisfaction with the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her ruling Awami League party. Demonstrators are demanding electoral reforms and the resignation of the government.
