Chile Earthquake: Magnitude 7.3 Shakes Northern Region
Powerful Quake Rocks Chile, No Immediate Reports of Damage or Injuries
A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 struck northern Chile on Thursday, according to the Chilean National Seismological Center (CSN). The epicenter of the quake was located in the Antofagasta region, approximately 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) north of the capital, Santiago.
No Immediate Reports of Damage or Injuries
There are currently no immediate reports of damage or injuries as a result of the earthquake. However, the CSN has issued a tsunami alert for the coastal areas of the Antofagasta region. Authorities are urging residents to move to higher ground and follow all safety precautions.
The quake was felt strongly in the Antofagasta region, as well as in the neighboring regions of Atacama and Coquimbo. Witnesses reported feeling the ground shake violently for several minutes.
Chile is located in a seismically active zone, and earthquakes are relatively common. The country has a history of major earthquakes, including the devastating 8.8-magnitude quake that struck in 2010, causing widespread damage and loss of life.
