Maduro Sympathizers Hand In Spanish Diplomacy Sparks Criticism

Maduro Sympathizer's Hand in Spanish Diplomacy Sparks Criticism

Venezuela's Controversial Diplomat

The appointment of Carmen Bohórquez, a staunch supporter of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, as the South American nation's ambassador to Spain has drawn widespread criticism both within and outside Venezuela.

Bohórquez, a former foreign minister under Maduro, is seen by many as a symbol of the Venezuelan government's authoritarianism and its suppression of political dissent.

Opposition Condemns Appointment

Opposition leaders in Venezuela have denounced Bohórquez's appointment as a betrayal of the Venezuelan people.

Julio Borges, a former president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, called Bohórquez "a representative of a dictatorial regime that has caused hunger, poverty, and exile for millions of Venezuelans."

International Concerns

The appointment has also raised concerns among human rights groups and foreign governments.

José Miguel Vivanco, the Americas director at Human Rights Watch, said that Bohórquez's appointment "sends a terrible message to those who have been victims of human rights abuses in Venezuela."

Spain Under Pressure

The Spanish government has faced pressure from both within Spain and internationally to reconsider Bohórquez's appointment.

In a statement, the Spanish Foreign Ministry said that it would "evaluate the situation" and "take into account all relevant factors," including the concerns raised by human rights groups and foreign governments.

Diplomatic Fallout

The appointment of Bohórquez has also strained diplomatic relations between Venezuela and Spain.

In response to Bohórquez's appointment, Spain recalled its ambassador to Venezuela for consultations.

Maduro's Threat

In retaliation, Maduro has threatened to expel the Spanish ambassador from Venezuela.

The escalating tensions between Venezuela and Spain are a further sign of the deep political and economic crisis in Venezuela.
